Will Ferrell's 'The Hawk' Review: A Disappointing Golf Comedy (2026)

In my opinion, Will Ferrell's latest Netflix comedy, 'The Hawk', is a letdown for fans of his classic work. While I understand the excitement surrounding this project, especially given Ferrell's history with 'Anchorman' and 'Talladega Nights', I found myself underwhelmed by the final product. The show's premise, set in the world of professional golf, had the potential to be a hilarious satire, but it fell flat in my eyes. The main character, Lonnie 'The Hawk' Hawkins, is a textbook Ferrell type, selfish and oblivious, but the show fails to give him the edge and quirkiness that make Ferrell's characters so memorable. Instead, we're left with a half-baked, softened version of a Danny McBride protagonist, which is a far cry from the sharp, satirical humor Ferrell is known for.

One of the biggest problems with 'The Hawk' is its lack of narrative momentum. The inciting incident, the death of Hawk's caddy, feels like a mere blip, and the show fails to build upon it. The creative team, closely wedded to Ferrell's perspective, seems to be afraid of attributing Lonnie's sudden renaissance to anyone but himself, which makes the character's transformation feel random and unconvincing. The show also struggles to explain the fundamentals of professional golf, leaving viewers like me lost and confused.

The supporting characters, such as Lance and Natalie, are underdeveloped and lack dimension. The show's attempt to explore the theme of a nuclear family coming back together is half-hearted, and the overall story feels uninspired. While I appreciate the effort to create a buddy comedy about two ne'er-do-wells shaking up the staid world of country club athletes, the execution falls flat.

In my view, 'The Hawk' is a disappointment, especially for a longtime Ferrell enthusiast like me. The show's lack of bite, narrative momentum, and character development leaves me uninspired. While Ferrell's classic work is deeply important to me, I can't help but feel that 'The Hawk' falls short of the mark. Perhaps it's time for Ferrell to explore new avenues and challenge himself with more complex and nuanced characters. Until then, I'll be sticking to his classic work, which continues to bring me joy and laughter.
